LOWER 48 (WA/OR/CA)

Updated March 2020

While weather remains an active threat, fresh Bottomfish landings have been increasing steadily and significantly over the past week. Now is a great time to begin to advertise specials on species such as Rockfish, Dover Sole, and Petrale Sole. We are expecting landings to increase more over the next 1-2 weeks, before levelling out. Generally, we will see steady landings until early April, barring any difficulties with weather.

Black Cod (Sablefish) frozen inventory is healthy on a variety of sizes. In addition, we are currently offering MSC-certified 4 oz, 5 oz, and 6 oz frozen portions that are individually vacuum-packed. We are also offering a 2 oz IQF skin-off portion. Please ask your sales rep for more details!

PACIFIC HALIBUT

By Steve Becic
Updated Feb. 2020

2020 USA Halibut season is coming up soon! It is anticipated to start in the middle of March as normal. After the stock assessment showed worse than anticipated numbers, a quota reduction is likely. How much that will be remains to be seen. It looks like somewhere between 5% and 20%. These decisions will be made IPHC meeting February 3-7th.

Market Conditions:
USA Frozen inventories from direct producers are extremely low. Little to no 10/20 and 20/40 are available. 40/60 and 60+ are available as well as fletch at decent numbers but overall frozen halibut prices are up from last year. Fresh Norwegian farmed halibut is available on the market for high 8’s to low 9’s depending on volume. Expect more Russian product to show up on the market in the coming years as they are pursuing their MSC certification.

The West Coast Groundfish Fishery – A Sustainable Success Story

20 years ago, the West Coast Groundfish fishery was on the verge of being over fished due to poor fisheries management at the time. Through effective management change, sustainable practices, and fishermen cooperation, this fishery has evolved from being close to overfished to one that has received MSC certification and been identified as the poster child of a good sustainable fishery. We are proud of our contributions towards rebuilding this category and supporting the fishing communities we depend on.
