Pacific Seafood CSR Report 2023

12 SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY VALUE CREATION AND QUALITY SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITIES SUPPORTING OUR TEAM MEMBERS Blue Foods Food Production & Greenhouse Gas Emissions According to the World Economic Forum, the demand for blue foods, or food from aquatic sources is expected to double by 2050. Blue foods generally have a lower environmental footprint than many landbased animal-sourced foods, according to a Blue Food Assessment led by Standford University’s Center for Ocean Solution and Center on Food Security and Environment. Pacific Seafood continues to expand our aquaculture capabilities to meet this growing demand. Compared to other proteins, data shows aquaculture has the least effect on the world’s resources. According to the USDA, beef cattle production has several negative impacts on the environment, including greenhouse gas emissions, an issue that is of major global importance, along with the impacts of nutrient losses, water consumption, and fossil energy use. Data shows aquaculture uses 1/6 of the feed required for beef cattle. See page 19 for more on carbon reduction.
