Pacific Seafood, provider of the healthiest protein on the planet, released its seventh annual Corporate Social Responsibility Report, “Beneath the Surface.” This year’s report emphasizes Pacific Seafood’s commitments to sustainable seafood, environmental responsibilities, value creation and quality, as well as efforts to support communities and team members. 

Highlights of the report include:  

Sustainable Seafood  

  • Certifications – Pacific Seafood increased its sustainable seafood offerings by 34% with 67 certified sustainable species through the Marine Stewardship Council, the Aquaculture Stewardship Council, and Best Aquaculture Practices. 
  • Bycatch Reduction Measures – By partnering with independent observers and utilizing various excluder devices, Pacific Seafood significantly reduced bycatch, protecting vulnerable species. 

Environmental Responsibility  

  • Sustainability Saves – In 2023, Pacific Seafood launched our new resource conservation initiative, Sustainability Saves. With the new ability to track utility usage, along with continuous education, Pacific Seafood team members saved 13,000,000 gallons of water companywide. 
  • World Oceans Day – Through Pacific Seafood’s World Oceans Day initiative, Pacific Seafood team members prevented 5,213 pounds of debris from entering the oceans and various waterways. 
  • EPA Award Pacific Seafood was recognized with the EPA’s 2023 Regional Pollution Prevention Award for pollution prevention practices that exemplify environmental excellence and innovation.  

Value Creation and Quality 

  • Fish Town Fertilizer – Pacific Seafood continues to develop new ways to utilize leftover materials from its processing facilities, including Pacific Seafood’s Fish Town Fertilizer, developed to help meet the company’s goal of 100% whole fish utilization. 
  • High Audit Scores – In 2023, Pacific Seafood’s Value Creation and Quality Teams excelled in food safety processes with top audit scores. 

Supporting Our Communities 

  • National Seafood Month – Pacific Seafood team members celebrated October’s National Seafood Month by partnering with food banks, schools, and community organizations to make seafood more accessible to local community members. Throughout the month, 11,000 pounds of seafood were donated, 341,071 meals were provided, and 2,600 families were served.  
  • Coast to Kids – In 2023, Pacific Seafood launched its Coast to Kids initiative with the commitment to supply students with healthier school lunch options. Within the first year, Pacific Seafood supplied seafood to three Oregon school districts. 

 Supporting Our Team Members 

  • Development Programs – Throughout 2023, 140 Pacific Seafood team members graduated from development programs such as Team Blue, Supervisory Basics, and the Management Development Program. All programs are created to develop leadership skills and enhance personal and professional growth. 
  • Feedback – As part of Pacific Seafood’s goal to continuously improve, the company launched a biannual team member survey to gauge areas of improvement, including company communication and job satisfaction. 
  • 401K Record Profit Match – In 2023, Pacific Seafood delivered an industry-leading profit-sharing match contribution to 1,988 team members.

The company increased sustainability efforts, supported ground-breaking research, created long-lasting community partners, and added more team member benefits.

Highlights of the report include:

Sustainability & Environment

  • PAC-12 Carbon Offset – In partnership with the PAC-12, Pacific Seafood made the first-ever carbon neutral Power 5 Conference Game a reality by purchasing carbon offsets from United Green Energy.
  • Saving Energy with LED Lighting – Pacific Seafood in Quilcene dropped energy usage by 75%. By partnering with Jefferson County Public Utility District, Pacific Seafood was able to replace old lighting with LED bulbs that will save one million kilowatt hours of electricity a year.
  • Sustainability Efforts Increase – Pacific Seafood’s EHS (Environmental, Health and Safety) team nearly doubled in 2022 with the addition of two team members focused on broadening the company’s sustainability efforts.

Value, Creation & Quality

  • Fish Skin Anti-Aging Research – As part of Pacific Seafood’s work with Oregon State University’s Seafood Research and Education Center, researchers found evidence to suggest the gelatin in the skin of Pacific Whiting can prevent skin wrinkling caused by UV (ultraviolet rays).
  • Fish to Animal Feed Research – Pacific Seafood Bio Products studied the effect of feeding Pacific Surimi’s dried waste to chickens and found it enriched edible tissues with significant levels healthy omega-3 fats.

Community

  • World Oceans Day Trash Pickup – Pacific Seafood prevented more than 500 pounds of trash from entering waterways with the first-ever companywide World Oceans Day trash pickup event.
  • National Seafood Month Volunteer Event – With the launch of Pacific Seafood’s first-ever food bank volunteer event to recognize National Seafood Month, the company and its team members created new and lasting partnerships with area food banks.

Our Team Members

  • Record Breaking Internship – A record number of 26 students participated in Pacific Seafood’s 2022 Internship Program to learn meaningful, real-world experiences.
  • Full Tuition Grant Expansion – In addition to our partnership with University of Arizona Global Campus, Pacific Seafood partnered with George Fox University Gox University to offer another full tuition grant opportunity for Pacific Seafood team members.

Pacific Seafood Celebrates World Oceans Day

Portland, OR, June 10, 2022

June 10, 2022—Pacific Seafood Team members celebrated World Oceans Day with companywide actions to prevent debris from reaching our oceans. More than 100 team members volunteered their time to pick up debris from nearby beaches, water ways, and surrounding streets. In total, team members prevented more than 500 pounds of trash from entering the oceans.

Efforts were accompanied by an internal communications campaign to further educate team members on the importance of keeping our oceans healthy, such as the negative impacts of plastic marine debris which can: damage habitats, entangle wildlife, impair vessel engines, create navigation hazards, inflict economic loss, and transport non-native species.

“At Pacific Seafood we recognize that taking care of our earth is critical for the health of our oceans, as well as the communities where we reside,” said Amy Wentworth, Director of Environment, Health, and Safety for Pacific Seafood. “Our team members expressed a great deal of pride in being able to give back and support healthy oceans. We look forward to continuing our World Oceans Day efforts next year and extending activities to involve the broader community.”

Highlights of the report include: 

We Can Innovate 

  • Meal Solutions Division meets consumer demand for ready-to-cook items including the ability to skin pack, patty form, develop dips and spreads, marinate/preseason, and produce breaded and battered options 
  • New ovenable tray line features fresh, fully seasoned complete meals including sides that are packaged and prepared to ensure even cooking 
  • New FishTown organic fertilizer utilizes the raw materials from the cuttings generating in their plants which are ideal for establishing fertile soils and growing healthy plants 
  • Launched Tidal Tots, a delicious new twist on the tater tot  

We Can Educate 

  • Launched three new management programs including the Team Blue Leadership Readiness Program which develops emerging leaders from frontline teams allowing Pacific Seafood to build bench strength and promote from within

We Can Sustain 

  • Pacific Seafood became the first company certified to offer Best Aquaculture Practices Four Star with the certification of their hatchery. Once the trout currently at the hatchery completes their full life cycle (approx. 9 months) they will carry the BAP four-star certification  
  • 50 certified sustainable (Marine Stewardship Council, Best Aquaculture Practices, or Aquaculture Stewardship Council) species currently offered—and counting 
  • 28 certified sustainable facilities/farms (MSC, BAP, or ASC) 
  • Processed nearly 100% of our rest raw protein (cutting scraps, bones, shells) into 13 million pounds of useable seafood meal and oil, preventing 80 million pounds of fish waste from entering U.S. landfills  

We Can Advocate 

  • Worked with the USDA on a first of its kind program to develop and issue purchase orders for West Coast Seafood. In May 2021 USDA made its historic first-time purchase of West Coast seafood for USDA food assistance programs 
  • Congressman Greg Walden joined the Pacific Seafood Board of Directors after recently retiring from representing western, central, and southern Oregonians in U.S. Congress  

We Can Give Back 

  • Donated to more than 160 nonprofit organizations that serve the communities where Pacific Seafood does business including Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), Make-A-Wish, and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

NEW YORK, Aug. 20, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Relevent Sports Group (RSG), the premier soccer events and media business in North America and Asia, is pleased to announce today its partnership with Pacific Seafood Group.

In an effort to promote sustainability, all of the nets utilized for the 2021 Women’s International Champions Cup are actual sustainable fishing nets used in the Pacific Northwest.. The 2021 Women’s ICC takes place from August 18-21 at Providence Park in Portland.

Newport, Ore. , July 9, 2021

Pacific Seafood has donated over $240,000 to assist the City in its efforts to maintain, upgrade, and address its aging water infrastructure. The donation will help the City of Newport in its efforts to safely address the water needs of City residents and businesses.


“As a result of a corrected billing error, Pacific Seafood has agreed to forgive over $240,000 in overcharges. Pacific Seafood’s generous action comes at a critical time for the City’s water fund. The City of Newport has several major projects that are in need of immediate attention in order to ensure that City residents continue to have uninterrupted access to water service.” said Spencer Nebel, City Manager. “Pacific Seafood’s donation to the water fund is greatly appreciated and we thank them for their continued partnership with the City.”


Pacific Seafood operates five seafood processing facilities along Newport’s historic working waterfront, and is one of the City’s largest employers. The commercial fishing industry as a whole is the largest single contributor to net earnings in Lincoln County.

Clackamas, Ore., May 11, 2021— Former U.S. Congressman Greg Walden (R-OR) will join Pacific Seafood’s Board of Directors effective May 2021. Walden will Chair the Board’s Government & Regulatory Affairs Committee and help guide the company’s advocacy efforts on behalf of the seafood industry and the coastal communities that it benefits.
“Greg’s passion for rural communities and proven track-record of finding workable solutions to complex problems make him a natural fit for our Board,” said Frank Dulcich, President and CEO of Pacific Seafood. “He is already intimately familiar with our business and the various agencies and regulations that impact it so will be able to immediately hit the ground running.”


Walden is a lifelong Oregonian who spent 30 years in state and federal office. He recently retired after 22 years representing eastern, central and southern Oregonians in the US Congress where he chaired the powerful Energy and Commerce Committee. Walden has a documented history of working across the aisle to find solutions and has led legislative efforts across a wide-ranging portfolio of issues including energy, technology, telecommunications, and healthcare. Before election to Congress, Walden served eight years in the Oregon House and Senate, where his state House GOP colleagues twice elected him Majority Leader.


Walden recently formed a strategic advisory firm, Alpine Advisors, with the widely-known Alpine Group – a bipartisan, bicameral government affairs consulting firm in Washington, DC. He and his wife owned and operated radio stations in Oregon for more than 20 years. He plans to bring both his business and governmental expertise to Pacific’s Board.

April 29, 2021—Portland, Ore.— Pacific Seafood, provider of the healthiest protein on the planet, released its fourth annual Corporate Social Responsibility Report detailing efforts to be socially responsible in all areas of its business including sustainable fishing practices, food safety standards and the environment during 2020. Paramount this year was the company’s responsibility to their communities and extended Pacific Seafood family in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Highlights of the report include:

Sustainability
• 50 certified sustainable (Marine Stewardship Council, Best Aquaculture Practices, or Aquaculture Stewardship Council) species currently offered—and counting
• 28 certified sustainable facilities/farms (MSC, BAP, or ASC)
• Became an Official Partner of Team Green, an initiative of the PAC-12 that supports greening and sustainability on college campuses
• New Frozen at Sea (FAS) capabilities, allowing us to target a 100 percent retention rate
• New Fresh Locked Technology that naturally extends the shelf life of our products; thereby, reducing waste

Environment
• Processed nearly 100% of our rest raw protein (cutting scraps, bones, shells) into 13 million pounds of useable seafood meal and oil, preventing 80 million pounds of fish waste from entering U.S. landfills
• Committed to cutting food waste on the West Coast in half by 2030 as members of the Pacific Coast Collaborative Reducing Food Waste Initiative
• Invested in water treatment systems that re-introduce water to our rivers and oceans that is non-hazardous, contains no harmful chemicals, and leaves cleaner than when it entered the plant
• Recycled approximately 350,000lbs. of metal in 2020 through a partnership with Schnitzer Steel in Oregon

Giving Back
• Partnered with Snake River Farms and the Retherford Family (as seen on “Deadliest Catch Dungeness Cove”) to donate more than $3 million worth of premium proteins including 74,000 Wagyu steaks and 8,000 sustainable rockfish fillets to support increased demand on local food banks during the pandemic
• Helped facilitate a return to in-person learning for nearly 400 students in Warrenton, Ore., by providing Wi-Fi to a local summer camp with outdoor space for students to learn safely

Supporting the Industry
• Worked to assemble a national coalition of seafood industry participants to secure $600 million of assistance to fishery-related businesses that suffered a revenue loss of 35 percent or greater due to COVID-19

Pacific Seafood Promotes Traci Chidester to Assistant General Manager of Pacific Seafood Clackamas

Clackamas, Ore., Jan. 20, 2021 – Pacific Seafood, provider of the healthiest protein on the planet, announced today that Traci Chidester has been promoted from Retail Sales Manager to Assistant General Manager of Pacific Seafood Clackamas. Chidester will now partner with the existing Clackamas leadership team in overseeing both sales and operations. She is excited to focus on talent development and growing product offerings to meet the changing demands of customers in our new normal.

“Our customers’ needs are changing, and rapidly,” said Chidester. “I’m looking forward to working with our team to find new avenues to best meet these demands for our customers such as increasing our value-added offerings.”

A veteran of the protein industry, Chidester began her career at US Foods where she oversaw national accounts before joining Smithfield as their Regional Sales Manager. At Pacific Seafood, Chidester has garnered a reputation for successfully handling the company’s most complex accounts through the several roles she has held including sales for foodservice and retail key accounts and as a district sales manager. Chidester recently completed her Master of Business Administration from Corban University in Salem, OR.

Expand Hybrid/On-Site School to Camp Kiwanilong

Pacific Seafood, Lum’s Auto Center, and Providence Seaside Hospital Partner with Warrenton-Hammond School District

Warrenton, Ore., November 23, 2020

Warrenton, Ore.—Nov. 23, 2020—The Warrenton Hammond School District along with community partners Pacific Seafood, Lum’s Auto Center, and Providence Seaside Hospital have partnered to provide Wi-Fi service to Camp Kiwanilong.

The introduction of Wi-Fi service at the camp allows the school district expand its hybrid/on-site opportunities. Now, up to 400 local students will have access to outdoor education activities while also completing their distant learning with in-person support from district staff. Camp Kiwanilong will also have the added benefit of Wi-Fi year-round which will enhance their community programming.

The camp will be staffed by teaching assistants to support on distant learning needs as well as lead physically distanced outdoor programming. Students participating in on-site or hybrid learning will rotate in their cohorts between the school building, Camp Kiwanilong, and home, to minimize exposure to COVID-19.
