Snow Crab - Pacific Seafood

Snow Crab

Chinoecetes opilio

Also known as Queen crab, the Snow crab is widely popular and tends to be more affordable than other crab species. With large populations in both the North Atlantic and North Pacific oceans, snow crab is the crab that keeps the crab houses cracking, and the retail cash registers ringing. The main commercial fisheries are in the winter off Alaska, and in the summer off Newfoundland. Like all species of crab, populations vary year to year due to conditions of weather and the water, but Alaskan snow crab has a green Best Choice rating from Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch, and fisheries in the North Atlantic are MSC certified making it a great sustainable option as well. Snow crab has a rich, sweet, delicate flavor and firm texture.
